How to Measure & Quote Carpet
Broad
When you are searching around for prices on cheap carpet, and attempting to work out how much your carpet is going to cost you, there are a few things you need to think about in order to make sure you are getting the best price.
Often you will see cheap carpet priced at $22 or $30 a meter. There are two types of measurements to determine the meter length of the carpet.
The first is the original broadloom (which is 3.66 by a meter) and the other is square meter (1.00).
Ideally you are calculating the price based on broadloom, not square meter, in order to more accurately reflect what you will really be paying.
If you have a three bedroom house with a hallway and a lounge room. the best thing to do is to draw a rough plan of what the rooms look like and label them as follows:
R1 = room 1
R2 = room 2
LR = living room
H1 = hallway one
Your drawing doesn’t have to be accurate just as long as the measurements are accurate and the rooms are labelled clearly and correctly.
Example:
R1 = 3.6 x 3.6 = 12.96 sqm
R2 = 3.3 x 4.85 = 16.1 sqm
R3 = 3.3 x 3 = 9.9 sqm
H1 = 6 x 1.2 = 7.2 sqm
LR = 6.6 x 3.3 = 21.78 sqm
Add the total square meterage up and you get 67.94 sqm. Then you need to divide this by 3.66 to work out the lineal meter price (or broadloom meterage).
So 67.94 / 3.66 = 19 BL.
The reason you multiply by 3.66 is simple: Broadloom meter is how carpet is made and also how carpet is generally charged for. The square meter price always looks cheaper, but this is how companies can get away with looking like they are selling carpet for a very low cost.
If the carpet $69 per broadloom meter, you now know that you need 19 broadloom meters of carpet. Then you must multiply that by $69 and your carpet will cost you $1,311.This price will likely not include underlay and the laying of the material, so make sure you find out the cost of these in advance.
Also note, that these estimations are based on secondhand carpet prices from McMats, which are very economical and is a McMats formula based on secondhand commercial carpet, which is recycled from various places to ensure that you get top quality cheap carpet. It is always best to check with the company the formula for lineal meter and square meter to make sure you are working out the right price.
If other companies sold their carpet by the square meter price ($30 per sqm) then for 67.94 sqm multiplied by $30 ,the price would be $2,038. Quite a difference, as you can see.
I hope this post helps you when working out how much your carpet is going to cost you.
